My sister is struggling and needs help. I dont know what to do. She is unemployed due to a car accident and has had several back procedures done over the last few months. She has two little girls ages 6yrs and 3yrs and her husband has walked out on them out of the blue. Everything is passed due and she dosent know what to do. She lives in GA im here in MO and we dont have a lot. Im trying to figure out a way to get her and her girls up here so we can help her more. Jobs are pretty much nonexistant where she lives and I think that she would have a better chance finding employment here. Also the cost of living here to there is significantally lower. Im so worried about them and I feel helpless that I cant do more than offer her and her girls a place to live and food to eat and thats only if I can get them here. She has a pretty decent van so all she really needs help with is money to get here on. If you think you may be able to help in any way shape or form please let me know. I know God is bigger than all of this and I have faith we will find a way to help her.

Hi Folks:
Sunny and 71 but quite breezy with gusts up to 31mph.
Paint the lee side first, those breezes might die down later.

What to do when visiting Grandma this Thanksgiving!

It's Thanksgiving time so when you go to Grandma's take your notebook and recorder. Family gatherings are a really great place to start gathering information to build your family tree. As names are mentioned memories are jogged and who knows how much information you can gather?

The basic information you are seeking are names and relationship, places, dates, and where they lived. If anyone served in the military, what branch? Did anyone immigrate here? If they did when and from where?

Once you have the basics you are on your way to a great adventure!

You need two official records (at least-more is better) here are the basics sources for documentation:

BIRTH CERTIFICATES- Gives the individuals name, parents names and place of birth, birth order and many list parents occupations. Most states will allow you to purchase these for genealogy purposes. Be aware, not all states had birth certificates before 1920. If not you can get documentation from BAPTISM records or the CENSUS. Census records are open from 1930 back to the first census in 1792 and most list all members living in the household, year and place of birth. In some years place of parents birth

DEATH CERTIFICATES will have cause of death and other information such as spouse and possibly parents. Note: the person is dead so they can not have given their parents names so these may not be accurate, especially if the surviving spouse never knew the parents. Here is a case where you use sibling information. Look at a full blooded uncle's or aunt's death certificates to see if the parents names match.
Many people have health issues/questions so death certificates may help with hereditary diseases.

WILLS- List heirs, prove parenthood and may list daughter by married name along with grandchildren.

Other sources for documentation and information are:

COUNTY COURT records for land, court proceedings, (includes wills), voter registration information. Some county and state records have been destroyed by disaster,Civil War, weather and fires.
CEMETERY records list place, date of death and age. Some office records include spouse, parents and military service.
The NATIONAL ARCHIVES is wonderful! Pension, bounty land, service and lots of help. Their records start around the American Revolution. If they have a record there is a fee to get copies. http://www.archives.gov/veterans/research/genealogy.html
CHURCH RECORDS provide baptism, marriage and death information.
COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETIES are a gold mine of information, most are on line, and many have people just waiting to help you. Check with your local library they usually know where to find the historians and historical societies for you.
STATE CENSUS usually halfway between federal census. They have many names and a lot of useful information.
MISSOURI STATE ARCHIVES Secretary of State link has lots of info for genealogy and history http://www.sos.mo.gov/categories.asp?id=4
STATE ARCHIVES hold histories of counties, military service, tax records. A plethora of information.
STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY These are wonderful, chock full of information.
SOCIAL SECURITY death records. Look up by name or SS # to get place and date of death.
NEWS PAPERS- An obituary is not documentation but a step that can help. Sometimes it will list surviving family and where they live. This is especially helpful if somebody moved. Obituaries many times will have stories about the deceased.
LIBRARIES are like an Aladdin's' Lamp. Many have excellent history and genealogy departments. A plus is they have helpful people to assist you.

DNA lineage is coming into its own. Some families are connecting through the male lines using Y chromosome testing and through the female lines using Mitochondrial DNA tests. There are several labs that are charging for this service. An example of how this works can be found on the St Clair/Sinclair website. http://www.stclairresearch.com/index.html

The Internet has made this the best of times to do genealogy. Many sites are free and others have free trial periods.

SOME FREE INTERNET SOURCES to start::
Cindy's list is excellent source to start. It has links to many resources free and not. http://www.cyndislist.com/

LDS-Morman Church has done a wonderful job conserving thousands of records and made them searchable and free. http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

A good rule of thumb is to get all the names you can and what relation they are to you. If you think you have lost your mind now, just wait until you have three generations of JIM's who named at least one of their son's JIM then try to figure out which Jim goes where. Ah, that is the fun of it! Headlines should read, "Ward off Alzheimer's Do Genealogy Everyday!" "Better mind exercise than Sudoku, with a purpose and much more interesting". After all, this is about you, your family, your history'

...and y'all have a weekend so good it transcends your expectations.

Thursday:
Hi Folks!
Am all jeeped up from the coffee at the local elementary school. It's Grandparents' day and understand they're having a vet's thing at 0900. Time for this one to duck.
The 2 biggest things this school needs, according to teachers, is AC and books.
The AC we'll get diagnosed. Yours truly thinks a chiller system might be best solution 'cuz there are way too many wall openings (It's a school!). Gonna talk with HVAC in my network, see if we can't offer a PR installation by a local firm. Call it a pilot study so it's palatable to the administrators, who are all sitting in air conditioned offices you betcha.
For this ol painter, it would seem the top lite of a percentage of windows could be replaced with an exhaust fan and a permanent clerestorey. 120v as part of lightning defense would be fine, each one hand-switched and quiet.
Southern exposures might be getting a little more passive solar for cold months, then covered with temporary opaque panels with educational themes, done in-house with art teacher coordination. We might know someone who has some non-toxic paint. Whether these panels need to breathe awaits closer scrutiny.
Most of the classrooms were sensory overload, but this ol fart is 61. We were lucky to have to two tones of bilious green in a parochial school. The walls sure weren't a distraction, but by the same token, sites with motion are red-X'd instantly. All in all, Robberson is a comfortable place to learn.
BOOKS: If any of y'all have kids' books at garage sales, especially low-end reference, please write back pdq. There's no school at Robberson tomorrow (they probly have to clean up after all us slobs trampled through) so we can get those books cleaned up as necessary and to the school. After all, my granddaughter is the reason for all this. Some of the kids looked like bioweapons (some of the adults too).
OK: We're mobilized. Drop-off points will be posted in a few minutes after I call and ask.
THANK YOU

first drop-off point for kids books: StripMall at Republic and Scenic: the Countryside Pet Clinic til 5:00 today and tomorrow. no formalities jus run em in.

For now I will make appointments for pick-up this afternoon if you live North of St Louis Avenue. Need pickup points for SE and West end. mail quick. thanks.

North Drop off point is Solo at Division and National
If you are going to drop books at Robberson, tomorrow would be better.

Flea Market owners: You probly know where those kids' books are. Would you ask the booth renters to respond to this posting with a ph # and prepared to entertain offers?
Anyone wishing to see their company's name in print may write in and it will be arranged.

A quote from the tattoo shop at National and Turner:
"I would be happy to help and have a buncha boxes".
So if it's after school hours run by the tat shop and see what's goin on.

It's all about the kids having enough variety to read. Teacher is final and only censor. (Not me, unh uh, no way).
Better scoot.

Out and About (Springfield + nrby)

Hi Folks:
65 and sunny. Sounds like a radio station.
It's nice to look out the window until about 1:00, then walk outside and blow off some interior cooties. Go back inside unless something is amiss. For us thin-skinned older guys, this sun is murder.

Gardeners: put hay on some plants.

Painters: make hay while the sun shines. If you are stuck on an exterior, paint yer East side first since the substrate needs to be a double nickel for those overly-sophisticated lawsuit-avoiding high-profit mud waterbases.
Couple tricks: add a tablespoon of automotive anti-freeze per gallon. Do it now, at the start of the day, cuz it will increase your gloss very slightly and but can help avoid flashing. Watch for gassing bubbles if spraying.

Be careful with this stuff, folks, it's fatal for cats and dogs. Google Ethylene Glycol MSDS. If you need to assassinate a feral cat, please write so I can snatch the bothersome little dude. Other animals trapped with a live trap, max size is a small coon, for $5 plus gas at 14mpg. Photo package of the event available cheep.

Office workers: This is a new section. Am searching for a white collar employee to help write this morning cup of coffee newsletter. In the meantime I will try to address and indentify our common issues. Far as the writer remembers, the big 3 were employer-induced stress, drudgery, and distracting office politics.

Well, since we were already getting into a single bureaucracy, better bring everyone up to speed:
http://www.usa.gov/Agencies/Federal/Executive.shtml
These are the biggest agencies. We're gonna go through and see what kind of changes there have been in the country's largest employer. What kinds of information are still public domain? For my vets, where are the links between Justice and Homeland? Those folks can hopefully see the value of hot live ops experience, kinda like a good tender for mixed-gas diving. Same/same with the interstice at Corps of Engrs and FEMA.

Am also looking for the disintegrating bureaucracies. The worker bees from those institutions make really good job club members (in both directions). The executives are generally obsolete technicians or holdovers from reorganizations, because they know where the bones are buried, so they will be transitioned as supernumeraries into retirement.

Mea Culpa on not having the NOAA records yet. Am faced with the choice of learning another language (technical meterology) or presenting history as written by NOAA and NWS. More on this as time fulfills.

The writer agrees with several types of zoologists: Linneaen taxonomy should scrapped and all the new stuff , written in English. There would be a common-language system up to the actual rigorous definition of the determining factors. That's where a specialty should start.
Approximately at "Family" in the old hierarchy.

Most research scientists will purposely obscure their area of expertise by couching ALL descriptive terms in
extremely obtuse or low-cognizance terms. A doctoral dissertation will most likely be flunked if written in "lay" terms. ALL non-numerical terms can be treated from the base of a Senior in High School (about 70 thousand words). New terms can readily coigned via the Aryan method of run-on conjunctions. If you can't differentiate in 70,000 words to the degree necessary, perhaps method deserves another look.

Has anyone else encountered the malaise and lassitude going around? Is it a result or a causative agent? Am thinking we've become a whole society of depressed people. Maybe someone engineered mononucleosis into a less detectable form. VA supplies the writer with an anti-depressant, and it's a real not-worth-it roller coaster ride to miss or stop taking it.

That's about it for today. It IS hump day for employed people.
Personal note: Judy: please write something.
May your Wednesday bring you wealth.

The Missouri State Pre-Medical Society/FIMRC is planning a trip to Peru to volunteer their spring break to help with a clinic in an underserved region. As this trip will be somewhat costly to the members we have been given the opportunity to sell coupons for Papa Johns Pizza. These aren't the kind you find in the Sunday paper. They are specifically for fundraising purposes and we purchase them and have to sell them at a higher price. The coupons allow you to recieve a free large pizza with the purchase of a large pizza. This coupon can be redeemed up to twenty times and at ten dollars a coupon you are getting a second pizza each time you order Papa Johns for just 50 cents! If this isnt enough of a deal for you think about how much you will be helping these students who regularly volunteer in the community along with the children in Peru they are going to help while other college kids hit the beach. Orders need to be in by November 10th. Send me an E-mail at Afshar2431@live.missouristate.edu or call/text to 417-593-1256.

Sunny and 61
Hi Y'all:
Here's Tuesday.
Folks with exterior jobs going are really lucking out. One part is saying "darn, wish we'd have started that porch work" and the other is looking back in NWS records. Looks like there's a bit more than was bargained for, and learning how to read their language is going to take a day or so.

NOAA is in Asheville, NC. By strictest definition they may be in the Research Triangle, if so, that's a good deal West of Raleigh. Wonder what they know... We used to play with the ROTC cadets in Euwharrie Nat'l Forest, not far from there. Even back then this was considered advanced training and just about everyone, white hats included, could get fined for leaving sign.

Have been exploring the DHS/FEMA/US FIRE complex. Still don't have application form(?!). This is one of the arms of the executive branch that still does Veterans Preference. Is this another well-kept secret, like 6% homeloans? (Non-existent now unless you are willing to start a 5 to 9 year process).

Hunters: Diurnal animals will be moving around next few days. Nocturnals are having their patterns upset by a very late Indian Summer. One could wish for a little IR gear to photograph owls.

Fishermen: forget it.

Gardeners: Go to the Nature Center at the bottom of Glenstone and see what's going on. Some of the staff there are knowledgeable in local botany.
http://mdc.mo.gov
has pages on local flora. For those imminent ornithologists who grow backyards for birds, they've got a boatload of info. You can track down free soil testing, species guides, attractants and repellents...
You think "Missouri Conservationist" is a nice slick? Wait'll you see the site.
If you buy seeds, bulbs, and such, we've had very successful dealings with
www.horizonherbs.com
Say hello to Richo for me.

Closer to home, we have the local groups who give away trees. If someone from one of those groups would contact me, I'd like to do background. PSA would be a good start.

Just a reminder to folks next time you get upset at non-sequenced lights on our main drags, the only gridlock is the inbound SE sector in the a.m. But then, yours truly gets to avoid the T-mobile congestion around Kearney and By-pass.

13 In and Out, over I-44, seems alleviated a bit by the diamond exchange. What do y'all think?
Anyway, the gridlock is not missed.

The author knows of a 26 yr old young lady who is a phlegbotomist and runs a good front desk. Most recently for Sports Medicine Clinic in Miami with professional athlete clientele. She's looking for upscale clinic/office environment.

Need a good driver? Local/OTR, clean safety record, HAZMATS and sensitive cargoes. Not a rookie.

In my own job club there's a plumber, who might do a service call here and there. What's a painting contractor doing in a job club? Getting wom referrals I trust.

Wanna start a job club? It's facilitated through this column. This is the real thing, not some bureaucrap's idea of exploitation for show. Mine is North and mostly blue collar. There is one SW, mostly unemployed male homeowners. They say it is closed to new members for now, though.

Well, got a late start but it's a hydrocodone day anyway. Gotta stop using the body as a derrick.

Have a Tuesday so good you almost don't want to go home.

Howya doin'? Ya doinOK?
High of 70, Southerly breezes.
Here it was thought Indian Summer were those 2 days around the 20th.

OK: No work today, probly call some employers and find the optimists, or those with enough layback to be able to recruit and try top-line pre-screened skillsets. So much for the plug.

We have a guest columnist coming aboard soon. Please read their stuff and tell us what you think.

Checked the madder, it's doing pretty well, having caught the trellis and creepin on up. In 18 months should be able to harvest first of root.

Hunters: watch yur windage folks. and get a Positive sight picture before moving finger inside the trigger guard. Take a deep breath. let if half out and check your cheek weld. squeeze. ride that round home while bringing back up for the mercy round. Do not take your sights off the game, especially birds.
This is one of those points where muzzle discipline comes in. Your finger oughta be outside the trigger guard by now, Before you take your first step. Safe on. Now that you can avoid the supreme embarrassment of having shot yerself, secure the weapon and draw the knife for field dressing. Some folks like to stop and reload at this point, and it might be a good habit at that.
If your shot went off prematurely your trigger pull is probly set too tight. You'll be moving North to South most wise, so with the wind in your eyes it might do to have some glasses.

Fishermen: If anyone knows about November bass in impoundments, could ya tell this poor old Minnesnowtan? Have heard it can be done, and that balmy breeze lends to one's erroneous thoughts of hooky.

Bet the links will be crowded today. Any readers do golf? If you write and do golf, would you like a links beat?

Did you know that some families make an operation out of Halloween? Two early teen kids with good costumes can garner a little over 5 pounds of candy in less than two hours. And this despite poor market conditions: low percentage of porchlights means more ground to cover. The economy sucks and relatively few are fortunate enough to do the candy. Spectre of tainted goodies. (This columnist has seen and understands sadism, but they usually don't get to see the results- what is that?!!?).
Are you listening employers? These kids went out and produced. By motivation, of course.
Honey will get you a lot more than a whip. Ask Joe Coors.

It ain't real hard to find out what motivates employees and other types of labor: in the Ozarks the best way is walk up and ask 'em.

Just like communities, businesses need to have labor cognizant of the work to be done. American workers need to get up of our butts and give the man fair days. In return, "the man" needs to be responsible about providing work and its conditions. This is just an ideal from Adams' division of labor, but it might be what we need.

Oh yeah, if you would like to see the statistical model of rotating-crew on a "skilled" labor site, write in. Have about 30 years of non-dependable labor as graphed against movement in the economy. (You can pick up continuity by smoothing transitions yourself).
Trade you for a potential job opening for a vet. Trial for hire, train for hire, blue or white collar, pre-screened.

Well, the outdoors calls. Better get our little postage stamp of a lot squared away for Winter.

You folks have a Monday so good it feels like a Wednesday.

Cuba, an isolated island nation, rebuilt its quality of life following the collapse of cheap oil, supplied by the former Soviet Union. This fascinating and empowering film shows how communities pulled together, created solutions, and ultimately thrived in spite of their decreased dependence on imported energy.

FRIDAY
Yesss. Weekend looks good too. We'll have a bit of scud, nothing to keep us from playtime!

HALLOWEEN: The writer was lucky enough to be a high-bottom drunk, but met some folks who weren't that blessed. Before you go out: drink, smoke, shoot, snort, or use as a suppository as per the Hippy Dippy Weatherman, and then intend to drive? Think about how you'd feel, even AFTER you got out of jail for manslaughter, about hurting that little kid. DON'T SCREW UP party in private and keep it that way Saturday. You'll thank yourself for the rest of your unwrecked life.
Dealers: It is your civic duty to protect your customer base. Throw a party!

That having been said:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=Springfield%2C+MO+%2B+Halloween&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g3
or if that huge link doesn't work, copy and paste
Springfield, MO + Halloween
into a search bar.

Yours truly will be escorting grandchildren around the block, because I know and therefore trust my immediate neighbors. Most of Them have kids and it's pretty cool.

Can't do candy? Try your local church if you can deal with being hit on. Parks? Even some local stores will have something going. Best bet: figure out what you like and do it at home. There'll be all kinds of stuff on the web at 4:00pm manana. and at the very least we should be able to stay in our own neighborhood.

The missus says we oughta put on Sounds of the Seasons and turn it all the way up to 8. That's our idea of living dangerously. It must be 2009.

On a societal note: The writer barely got an honorable in '75 and was home in Woodson Terrace. A high school classmate was a cop, and we stopped and chatted for a second. He had an X-ray machine and was x-raying candy so couldn't stay long.

Anyway, whatever else you do, be careful and don't hurt anyone.
Don't forget about DAV two bit sale Sunday morning, and MO Council forthe Blind at Kearney and Kansas (sort of) is having ½ price day today and tomorrow. Any other flea market promotions pls email here and I'll put you in.

Do this Friday like it's nothing, and have an OCTOBERFEST weekend.
I had two scarecrows on my porch a larger one that they only took the head and torso of, they left the legs sitting on the bench and the little boy scarecrow. Someone took them between 10:30 and 1:30 tonight. Thay also took a pupkin carved like a tiki face. it belonged to my special needs son who was so proud of it and could not wait to show it to his dad when he gets home tomorrow. It was the first time he got to hold the knife himself. I am really tired of having things stolen from me and my family. I live in a nice neighbor hood off of a fairly busy street with no sidewalk in front. These people either have to stop in the road or park in my driveway. I will catch then sometime and they are not goijng to like it when I do. Can't you just let a little boy enjoy his jack o lantern!

Good Morning!

It's Thursday! It's gonna rain with a high of 67. Weekend looks great and it's almost here.
If anyone has last-minute PSA's, my deadline is the moment of irrelevancy. That is to say, if you send it at 1:00 p.m., I might edit into an earlier column, or next morning if it will still be relevant. SEE? Online has numerous advantages for a dilletante journalist.

Have seen a lot of trailers that could be easily fixed up for FEMA use in crises. If all I need to beat is that $50,000 for new trailers after Katrina...
So these trailers will have rudimentary (non-brass and copper) plumbing: did you hear that most residents ripped out the plumbing for salvage/re-sale when they left? That's a very good indicator of what to expect in the future (actually FEMA shoulda known because a lot of their people came from the old HUD/Section 8 pools).
My stepson can run unmounted PVC lines so fast it'll make your head swim.
The electric needs to stay intentionally low-possible-use, so we are installing 60 amp boxes.
The roof and floor are fairly inexpensive to fix cuz they were cheaply made in the first place.
The walls were a problem: some are corrugated, and others have variable thickness of sheet metal. So we are developing a very inexpensive patch for those situations. These patches are fire retardant (Bromine gives us the same delay as 5/8 sheetrock), and bug-proof courtesy of some serious respiratory poison that does not effect us except for the kids who eat it.

Do you remember that this painter sat for both the lead abatement course and the asbestos removal certification? It gets ludicrous at some point how much minority butt the gov't kisses. I refused the licenses because of the horrible morass created by some empire builder. Can you spell Permissable Exposure Level? Most of the other 32 people in my lead class were government employees and couldn't. The instructor did not know the difference between red and white lead.

So back to these patches: in real life they will function well. I've just got to find a cheaper source of Bromine and I'll be ready to produce and market. Water and Ice-proof was no hill for a painter. For cosmetics, it requires re-painting the whole side or section of the mobile home. Don't shudder: I usually bid around $50 to paint one side of a trailer ($150 for whole exterior with one color, trim is extra). The paint is an industrial waterbase metal primer that runs $40/gallon but I'm getting 450 sq feet per gallon where SW and BM competitors are advertising 250 sf. Any color, including camo if it's a hunting/fishing trailer.

So this writer is looking for 2 things:
1. Independent flatbed owners to store and deliver to crisis site. (Prime was not interested and I wouldn't do business with them anyway, after the way they treated a Native-American friend). Now if I had VETERANS for drivers, it would be excellent.
2. Landlords needing patches. (I will make the poison unobtainable to the kids with an extra sealing/bridging coat) so I can test durability.

Do y'all know about the "new" US Fire Administration? They are probably a do-nothing agency with lots of pork, but here is some interesting reading:
On my paint crews it was standing policy to open the cooler at noon if we were on or ahead of schedule. We can't do the beer thing anymore but I shut the jobsite down at noon if we are on schedule. Does your boss have the authority to do this? Is it reasonable? After I started this practice, I got a few schlock jobs but free-do-overs are part of the offer if my quality isn't there). 'Course, I always had good people.

Well, let's take off and have a productive Thursday. Maybe even get off a little early tomorrow.

Hi Y'all
64 and windy.
Today is the only day without rain so git yer runnin' around done.
Dog grooming, groceries, ....

Have always been curious about how housewives spend their days. Having been a de facto house husband recently, I found it ain't all chocolate bon bons and soap operas.

The chores take about an hour a day: dishes, litter box/water/cat fool, knock the dust off a few things and vacuum the floors. Monday is laundry day, Wednesday is trash day, and the missus is home on Fridays (so forget anything getting done).
When all's said and done, it's not a bad life if one takes steps to counteract the boredom. Kids would fix that real fast. For the writer, though, there's part-time painting, doing this column, and doing some cosmetic tasks for our house, as well as making jewlery and developing new faux.

So today is all about creating small streams of income.

There are a few salient factors we must account: What CAN one do, physically? A housewife is not a good candidate for the lead brush hogger.
Most guys go out and bring in a little money. Think they know how to handle it? Not a clue. Besides: have you noticed? There is a definite trend for the lady of the house to be the chief breadwinner. Not only are the ranks of company officers increasingly dominated by women (who run much better office politics), but there is also an increasing presence in retail, pro outside sales, and to a lesser extent, the blue collar trades.

These days, if a woman is at home, it is either disability or her choice. (There are other reasons, also, most of them specious).
The days of single-income families are almost gone. The traditional roles of men as hunter-gatherers and women as child-protectors and farmers are pretty much gone, thanks to corporania and the IRS. Most corporations won't admit that women are more malleable in supervised roles. They are far less pain-in-the-ass and less expensive to manage. Attendance is not as good among women, but it is acceptable in light of the fact that most of them do what they are told without wasting a bunch of management time. Admittedly, that is a late 70's and early 80's view because this writer has avoided corporations like the plague after having gotten fired for doing too good a job. Sure hope corporate featherbedding is waning, and I'd rather see a competent female than an unmotivated male making my paint.

Back to the main point: What are those small streams of income? How does one do them?
First of all, if you are asking those questions at this point, I'm surprised you can read this column.
YOU know what you can do. As the partner of the breadwinner, the first thing you do is support the main bacon-bringer. Right after that you look around their operation for ways to make money. If your other is self-employed, it's fairly easy. If they work for a company that does gov't contracting, forget it and go do your own thing. Those companies can never allow work (and thus data) out of their control.

So what's your thing? It can be OEM on a small scale. There is a whole industry built up around folks who do "crafts". That industry mostly preys on crafters without providing an outlet for their goods, so looking for anything but sales is usually pointless. BUT you can support other industries and make a few bucks. If you are going to make, mine, gather, or purchase tangibles, you need an outlet. Enter the flea markets and consignment shops. Both of those approaches have become almost untenable because of steep booth rents, which discourage newcomers by not letting them make a small profit, so negotiate your booth rent carefully. A 10x10 should go for $50/month plus 5% of your gross sales. Any higher than that and you are getting ripped.

If you wanna go whole hog: get a 10x10 EZ Up ($350 with sides), pay Springfield for a $10 mobile vendor license, then set up a colorful retail display noticeable from the middle lane of Glenstone. You need permission from the lot's business owner, but that is usually forthcoming if you are going to increase their walk-in traffic. Sometimes they want to get greedier and charge a nominal fee like $5 or $10 plus a percentage of your sales. RUN. Those people will eventually ruin your set-up and THEY DON'T CARE. Someone listed a 20% cut of your sales. Maybe they are just cynical, hoping for 10% (which is still too high because they don't have raw materials or transportation invested). That would fit the Springfield commercial attitudes. This painter has never seen such a variety of rip-off schemes. Big cities are not even this bad. Every chiseler and charlatan from miles around must come here to feed on the immigrants. One thing, though. If you set up, be honest. Pay the lot owner anything you contract for. Don't rip off the public - in addition to being extremely short-sighted, you might sell to someone like me who will come back and get in your face for substandard goods.

If you like the EZ Up idea, write in and I'll share security tips.

The next area to look at is services. This painter is qualified to speak on that subject. You would be amazed at the number of parvenues here who made their money by cheating. They assume you must do the same thing, so they plan and lay financial traps for you. I've gotten to the point of refusing almost 50% of my inquiries because something alerted my bs sniffer. I won't even go to Bentwater or Fremont Hills any more. So if you render a service, be very careful about to whom or you'll get stiffed. And you cannot easily recover service already provided. For tradesmen, it is not only homeowners, but also most general contractors and real estate people will rip you blind and discard you. I am 6 for 7 in small claims courts, but it is apparent in larger cities that those judges are for sale. Since Huey Long would be proud of Springfield, there's no reason to think the same does not apply here.

A side note here: A judge in one of my cases in Mpls hinted that $75 cash would probably make my suit go smoother. Think the FBI was interested? No way. Also recently tried to turn in a doctor who is cheating VA. Think the FBI was interested? No way. They told me to go to VA Inspector General (who also turned a deaf ear). The point I'm making is that we have no representation against crooks at the Federal level. That being the case, why would you pay Federal taxes on goods that the Federal gov't had absolutely no contribution to? This used to be called taxation without representation. Locally, you can avoid MO taxes by selling in a neighboring state, or on a reservation where the state of MO has no jurisdiction without a felony commission.

DO NOT accept credit cards. You are selling your customers into financial indenture: a great payback for buying your product or service, 'ay? Besides, their cost is too high (7%?!!). Better to take personal checks you can chase when they bounce cuz those credit card companies are super-lazy about challenges. PayPal isn't much better as a fiduciary, but they are a viable alternative to credit/debit cards. Banks will cheat you at every turn if they are allowed, and besides, putting your money in the bank is an announcement that you have it these days. Any sharp operator can check your balance, they are not protected as they should be. Since deregulation, banks have converted back to a strictly pecuniary base. Now they WILL tie you up on the railroad tracks and walk away. Once they have your money, you will never get all of it back.

SO: the conclusion is that small is beautiful, try to keep from reporting egg money, and stay straight with your customers - they are the base of your income.
Oh yeah: one last point. Do not buy insurance. A recent check on my contractor's liability and bodily injury claims disclosed that they paid less than 40% of their claims; and there is a law in Missouri that if an insurance company denies your claim, you are still responsible for damages. There are no usury laws in Missouri, either, and this is not a "loser pays" state so you can bring frivolous litigation against anyone you want with small risk, just as harassment. Unlike most other states, Missouri will not help you recover losses. The Attorney General does not issue writs of replevin, or even let a small business owner garnish wages after judgment.

I find this an impossible climate to do straight business in. I will not re-license this coming year, and apologize to all prospective customers for leaving you to the mercy of the gypsies.

However, I am gonna sell jewelry in OK, and continue surface mining in AR, and maybe see if I can't do something about the sorry paint stores here who contribute to the problem when they could be part of the solution. Your best bets for a square deal are Porter on Lark (cash only - they keep sloppy books) and Glidden on Sunshine. Shirley Williams comes in a distant third because of quality control problems at home. (I can't imagine how they might have made their minority employees angry enough to pee in the paint). They have a tendency to ignore complaints unless you are a 20k/year customer. You will not have to deal with an account rep. The one on St Louis has a tendency to manipulate contractors for his own laziness and convenience.

Did you know Kwal is made in Mexico? Allied (except for Rick in Nixa) has always given me extremely poor service. At wallyworld the quality is very low in a way that will not be immediately apparent to DIY. Write in for additives to this paint. I can longer speak objectively about Seminole, the HQ for the good ol boys here. They act like they are doing you a favor by selling you paint. Did you know that the hardware store in Marshfield carries B. Moore? The hardware store on AA or C, just north of town and east of 65, was grandfathered in for Valspar, and they carry the 1400 series waterbases that leave American Traditions in the dust for quality.
I do not paint cars very often, and get my coatings on-line when I do (I like the old Ditzler).

Sorry, advice turned into something else, but y'all got some useful information. As far as creating small streams of income: the fewer people who handle your product, the more you will make. Try to get your stuff into the hands of the end consumer directly.

OK! May your Wednesday be so good it reminds you of happy childhood days.

Hi Folks:
Rainy and 54. Glad to be working inside.

Doors oughta be dry and set, but a few more hours is not going to hurt a thing. We should be getting depth of color on this round but we won't force anything. Probably Thursday will mark the start of the 2d color. Because this is a steel door, with no hard lines on the embossing, we will tape off the outside of each rectangle and then wet-blend the first color into the second along the edges while filling each "plant" with pure 2d color.

Also starting a job today where the photofinish panelling will be gesso'd and grounded, Final decision hasn't been made about colors, but it will be a fresco application. Inexpensive panelling will hold 1/8" to ¼ " of mud with no weight considerations, so we might even get to play with clears and semi-crystals to enhance the vertical lines instead of defeat them.

So much for painting.

How's hunting folks? MDC says 50% over last year for deer.
Turkeys are always hard to hunt, they are much smarter than their domestic counterparts. With all the wet, sound will not be as large a factor as motion. Maybe capturing one for a photo shoot would be fun. Should a live turkey be delivered to Boy's and Girl's Home?

Did you know that most edible roadkill used to be expedited to orphanages? It doesn't sound kosher, but freshly killed protein is always a treat where the writer comes from. Now, of course, you need a police report for the insurance companies, and just delaying that hour or so can make the meat unpalatable.

Fishing? Only if you are hardcore and mildly masochistic about fishing: the muskie will be running full strength on their pre-dormancy feed. You might also get the odd crappie with very small minnows way deep at the thermocline.

Did anyone catch the 25 cent sale at DAV on Glenstone? There's evidently some guy who thinks it's ok to grab a large pile of clothing (preventing access by everyone else) while he sorts. Think the clothes get put back on the rack? This guy must be a real horse's pattootie. Should we have some fun next weekend? This ol' paratrooper loves to deliver woodshed lectures to bullies.
Maybe just enough provocative patrolling to make him hit me first, and draw blood. That way assault charges could be preferred after having mounted a lively "defense".

Gardening: Anyone doing legal hydroponics?

SitRep on flea markets: SRTS. (situation remains the same). Someone needs to get off their butt and do something special for a booth.

Mater of fact: we will now open nominations for best booth in Springfield. Booth can be in any fleamarket that has a sign on its front door saying "flea market". Thrift shops are not eligible for this one.
Nominate by sending a digital photo and the address of the market. You may send a written description and booth # instead of pic. This poll will run for 3 days and the winner will be announced in this column on Friday.
Flea market owners may nominate.

Well, that's about it for today. Anyone want to see a special topic researched (non-political, please). If it has public merit the writer will be glad to go dig some stuff up for it.

Hope your Tuesday is so good you get a raise today.

Photographer new to area looking for suitable locations for great sunrise, or sunset scenes, must have clear view to background and interesting foreground.
I'm also interested in unique structures such as barns, bridges, windmills, watermills and abandoned rusty vehicles in hide away places, ( no regular junk yards) and very old secluded grave yards.
I'd like to know the location, best time of year for subject, best time of day, best direction of light for morning or evening.
I will be shooting black and white and color, any subject matter that would make for great abstract, graphic.
I'm looking for anything that is out of the ordinary, out of place, strange juxtaposition.
Your input will be appreciated

(yawn) G'mornin
rainy and 56.
Will have to set up worklights today. Congrats to y'all underneath that flourescent lighting. You a framer? Hardcore, dude. It's 0914 and most of y'all are on your third cup.

Anybody look at the radar? The clear areas are most probably the jet stream and it's pretty early to have it as far south as Mexico. Uh oh. Hope that's wrong.

Last time conditions were like this was the Halloween Blizzard of '93. Was working nights on a nail salon and OD green was popular then (yecch). Finished a little after midnight. Had a vehicle with a clutch, the temp dropped so fast that pushing in the pedal yielded an ominous pop. Cluch cable busted. Commo hadn't collapsed yet so got a ride from girlfriend. But this was Mpls. Took 3 days but no fines to recover the beater.

Alberta Clippers come through here about every 3 to 5 years. They usually carry a boatload of wet snow or sleet, followed by the bottom dropping out on temps. Ice storms. Stay tuned.

So: all you folks out on the road for a living, most of you have enough common sense to duck.

Back to these worklights: they suck. If one is applying a color or effect, the quality of halogen heats it up quite a bit. So it winds up getting turned off for color checks (especially with a taupe or a buff on a cloudy day) frequently. Has anyone successfully changed a bulb in a cheap halogen worklight? Yours truly, on a good day, might get one in three to work. And that's slowing down enough to handle the bulb with a fresh rag.

On the other hand, they are awesome for working with glosses and textures, including super-smooth. That makes them pretty good for blading.

We played around with different lighting schemes several years ago. Flourescent, Gro-lux, incandescent, and the then new "reveel" bulbs. Everything throws something off. Combinatin' just multiplied instead of factoring out. Tried to do some ambient light magnification but that got expensive real quick. Best we've found so far is inexpensive blue-blockers in halogen. 's good for everything to the 4th chip down on a color deck, or 4th level of color density if you will.

'nuff painter talk. What color is your work environment?

Blues and greens pacify. Jails are usually some kind of institutional green, a boring but calming sage. High ticket closing sites are usually monochromatic blues and chrome.

Reds and oranges excite, although the wrong shades will be more irritant than focused alertness.

Commercial attention-getters are blue/red and yellow/black combinations, because the human eye can't see both at the same time, so the edges blur.

Now we get to the yellows. It gets tricky here because we see in daylight colors (red, blue, yellow). As a matter of economy, paint manufacturers will tint in their own scale, usually magenta, cyan, and yellow. Please to note that yellow is a standard in both color systems. How that yellow acts in different lighting is the key to keeping color true. As luck would have it, yellow is the "thinnest" color so it takes more yellow colorant to "overcome" any other color.

The actual application of all these principles in your office is specious at most. The cheapest white latex they could find is usually the order of the day. You'd think they'd get an extra 2 or 3 percent work from y'all so they'd put a nice finish in. Most of the time its: "make sure you are cleaned up and out of here by 6:00 a.m. How can I get my bill reduced?" Geez.
Well, this is starting to get long and some of you just ain't interested. Save this column, though. This type of info comes in handy later.

May you have a Monday so good that when you get home, you didn't feel a thing.

Out and About (Springfield + nrby)

Hi Folks:
Another day in paradise. A high of 44, cloud cover, wind over 10 mph...
But ya know what? Came across an old list, which was for those Mpls -30F actual (not wind chill) days. They could be life-threatening if you didn't take care of business.

This list assumes the possiblity of a power failure. It also allows for the fact that sooner or later you have to get on the roads and drive.

1. Candles keep a lookout all year for good deals and stash.
2. Flashlights with at least 2 sets of back-up batteries and light bulbs for the good ones.
3. Extra blankets, also in the car
4. Railroad flares
5. Food and munchies that do not require cooking or refrigeration
6. Matches in the bathroom 'cuz the exhaust fan ain't gonna work.
7. Extra dry socks and underwear. Was behind on laundry when the power went down once and did not like it.
8. If possible, a back-up heat source.
9. Buckets and bottles of water.
10. Warm clothing.
11. Provide for the pets.

So we don't have it so bad. Worst winter thing around here is some of the drivers. There were two kinds of drivers in Minnesnowta: Those that couldn't drive on ice, and those that thought they could.
On some of the two lane asphalt, especially on a Winter morning, the traction is unpredictable. And PLEASE do not gun your engine at stop signs when there is a possibility of ice.

Also onnacounta we're probly gonna get more ice, as backlash from global warming, be aware that ABS brakes are dangerous to those of us who learned how to pump brakes to stop. Anti-lock Brake Systems will not let you do that, so plan your stops well ahead of a stale green and you won't go sailing through the intersection.

Here comes Halloween. Reckon the candy is a bad idea. Check out local church stuff, city park stuff, and probly the "Y" for kid activities on the eve. We must be lucky 'cuz of no soaped windows or bags on the porch stuff. Thought it was everywhere. Let's hear it for motion detectors.

Looks like Friday finally got here. Wishing y'all a good day would be redundant.

good morning

not bad at all for hump day: High of 70, and when it starts raining it won't quit for a few days. Tropical Storm Rick came ashore in Mexico yesterday. It was probly a problem until it tried to cross the very cold Humboldt current. We will get the spinoff later today, about dusk.

Good day to wrap up exteriors. Interior work is unaffected except for fine oilbase enamelling. It's too humid-add in a tablespoon of lacquer thinner or naphtha to your cut bucket and stir about every 20 minutes or so.

Hunting: the animals might not be going to ground until late afternnoon and they'll be on their fall feed-up. Try access trails to food patches until 10 am, then skirt those feeding places. City hunter? Please be a little extra cautious cuz the blowing semi-bare brush can fool the eye easily. Make sure of your target before you take the safety off. Animal move off too quickly? Gee. Too bad. Get off your butt and practice your woods and tracking skills.

If you think you can shoot another hunter and get away with it, because the law will deem it an accident, the victim's relatives might not take it so kindly. "Accident" might be a legal dodge, but it is far outside the hunters' code. (The writer never said he didn't know HOW to hunt).

Armament: On a day with 20 or 30 mph crosswinds, the writer would choose a heavier grain round. A 270 or a shotgun just won't cut it today unless you can sneak up on a deer. If you can do that, how come you are not on the managed bowhunt hunt at Fellows?

Well, it's time or a little past for the field burnings in Brown County, Indiana. The county is the home of IU (of Bobby Knight notoriety) and those fields were hemp plantations during the civil war and as late as the Korean War. Nobody told the plants to stop surviving. Every fall they must burn off acres and acres to prevent the illegal harvesting. Everyone grabs a picnic and a bottle of Boone's Farm and sits downwind. It was kinda like Woodstock musta been.

Do y'all know about the Fiddlers' Convention in N. Carolina? It is attended every year by such luminaries as Neil Young and YoYo Ma. The writer proposes that we start an annual Drum contest here.
We have a substantial population of Native Americans, who might know a thing or two about drumming. We could attract a major drum-maker to move production here. We could start stands of Swamp Oak. If we do it here, we avoid the Branson Snarl for professional musicians.
Somebody said "What's this WE white man?" Are you a drummer? Wanna play? Write in, the author will maintain coordination until it's on its feet.

Jobs for Vets: Have finally caught up with intake. This is a no-cost program for employers. We pre-screen your applicants to your qualifications, and most vets are eligible for subsidies if you have actual employment to offer, and we will help with the initial paperwork. If you work in any of several industries that cannot or do not offer employment as much as "work", we have experienced tradespeople and mechanics.
If you are a scam artist, you might think twice about utilizing this service. How would you like to have an angry Green Beret or SEAL on your butt? You can run but you can't hide. Vets: the service is free until you actually have income. You will also be invited to join a non-traditional social vets org. This is open to USAR and NG vets as well. A 214 is your qualification (regardless of discharge type).
The writer was a remington raider with the 82d, and built small operational teams.

Well, time to hit it. Can you have an extra cup of coffee this morning?
By the way, is music allowed on your jobsite or office? It is de rigeur for tradespeople and makes the day go so much better.

Hope your Wednesday is so good that you just drive home casually this evening.

Hi Y'all:
Sunny and 71, with the breezes kicking up again. Not bad, ay?

Today's column is about the different pet rescue operations around here.
If anyone is aware of a rescue operation that does not charge "adoption fees" other than spaying and shots, please mail in.

We are discussing a "United Weigh" type of approach after the incident with some low rent people throwing the pit bull and the Newfy mix off of an overpass recently.
We have already decided to not fund any operation with national ties. When the writer joined a social fraternity almost 2/3ds of any monies we raised went to the national chapter (for "bookkeeping").
Besides, it is common knowledge among groomers and vets that almost every pet that goes out of some organizations for adoption has some sort of ailment, usually kennel cough among other things.
It's too bad Bob Barker discontinued funding for the Humane Society here. We're guessing that is either the reason or the result of insufficient care of too many animals.

After all participants are identified, we will have a sit-down and talk about how to proceed. Seeking funding during a depression and human health care "reform" is chancy at best.
The following rescue points were taken from "TAME" magazine, published here in town as a glossy for pet industry advertisers.

All Creatures Animal Rescue PO box in Bolivar (417) 345-5002
Boxer/Schnauzer Rescue of the Ozarks in Republic www.bsro.petfinder.org
Canines N' Cats Adoption Station 2012 W. Garton Rd in Ozark (417) 581-5088
C.A.R.E. Adoption Center 1328-A W. Sunshine here in town. (417)875-6565
Greyhound Pets of America
PO Box in Spfld (417) 883-8156
Home for Life Cat Sanctuary (417) 733-4608
Killuminatati Foundation 4812 N. 11th St. Ozark www.thekilluminatifoundation.org
Kitty Rehab and Critter Cradle Animal Sanctuary (417) 859-2481 www.hallhaven.org
Pet Connection (417)823-7387 www.thepetconnection.org

the Southwest Missouri Humane Society is at 3161 Norton Rd in town, (417) 833-2526
Dropping an animal by here is still way better than a trip off the bridge.

Did you know most Veterinary clinics keep one or two animals for adoption? They WILL have shots and neuter, and be a "pick" for whatever reason.

Some other contacts that might be handy are:
ASPCA: 424 E. 92d St NY, NY 10128
Emergency Vet Clinic of SW MO: 400 S. Glenstone (417) 890-1600
Animal Poison Control (888) 426-4435

Please send in any other rescue points (Joplin? Branson? Blue Eye?).

As soon as this list is stabilized and backgrounds are checked, the writer will "secret shop" these organizations to make sure none of them are scams. Invitations to join a loose organization and fundraising could happen after that. Backgrounding will be reported in this column if it can be substantiated.

If you have cats or climbing dogs that are not declawed, you can have formica on some sills for $10 ea plus cost of laminate. (Sills with complex profile or bevelled edges are slightly higher).

If you have experience in pet adoption here, please write in and tell us, whether it be negative, positive, or neither. The community poll will have an effect on selection of orgs to help. Beware: the bs sniffer is ON.

Isn't this great? We have real genuine freedom of the press in Craigslist! We can use proper names and say less than positive things about people without getting sued or a lecture from some editor that thinks he knows what is best for everyone in town. The writer was taught growing up that if you don't have something good to say about someone, you keep your mouth shut. The line is drawn at corruption and whistle-blowing. If we see it, and could prove it, we will print it.
This happy situation relieves the necessity for spin doctoring (a common practice for newspapers that editorialize on the front page).

Well, it's gonna hit 60 pretty soon, and about an hour later my metal doors will be warm enough to paint.
By the way, speaking of honesty in print, we do not accept money for mention or advertising in this column, nor do we use it for commercial re-contact. If you communicate with us, you will find our replies more social than business. (Unless you mention that you need some painting done, then Look Out.)

If you would like a topic or sector researched, just write in. Please be aware that the writer does not get along very well with some types of bureaucraps.

Well, it sure is lookin' good out there. Better get cookin.
YOU! Have a Tuesday so good that it makes you like your work.

Good Morning Everyone:
Sunny and 70 with a South wind kicking up.
Excellent day for any oilbase, and will be a good day for waterbases after it hits 55F.

They say the deer "harvest" is going well. This hat's off to the bowhunters in Suburban areas. It takes more nerve than most have, to eat something when you don't what it's been eating. Trim the fat off those does, folks. You know where dioxin likes to live.

Anyone starting a physical regimen? Fall is the ideal time. It's cool enough that you don't sweat like a SEAL in Africa. The return of cool weather sparks our metabolism a bit, so this is the least amount of motivation it takes all year. Hey YO! Don't forget to stretch. 55F can cause some cramps that get real serious about hurting if you don't warm up.

Older or time restricted? Just a walk in this magnificent weather will do ya good. When's the last time you held hands with your wife, walking around the block?

Etiquette for Walking:
If you see a one-armed guy up on the ladder doing something, please don't wave. (If he set that ladder with one arm, you probly don't wanna mess with him anyway).
Know the difference between ducks, which rarely attack; and swans and geese, which frequently do.
If you are a city person recently located here, those people aren't crazy, they're just saying hi! It's OK here.
If you are downtown or near the courthouses, watch out for the Alpha males. Some of those guys are ruder n' heck.
Old ladies in grocery stores can be bullies too. Watch out for the cart on the achilles tendon trick.

While you are out walking, keep an eye out for animals you don't know. Are you from California? The squirrels here really ARE red! The writer has heard some horrendous stories about overly-aggressive fox squirrels in the Ozarks. Has anyone else heard these?

IO IO so off to work I go.
Y'all have a Monday so good, it reminds you of your best Birthday.
