The Sigma 8–16mm f/4.5–5.6 DC HSM covers APS-C sized sensors. This lens is a Sony/Minolta A-Mount lens on a Sony LA-EA1 adapter (Lens A-mount to E-mount Adapter version 1). The adapter allows the lens to mount on Sony E, provides exif information to the camera and allow changes to the aperture on camera. It does not support the HSM focusing motor or eye tracking. The lens has an AF (auto focus)/MF (manual focus) selector switch. The lens should be switched to MF for proper function. This configuration makes the lens manual focus only, however, at these wide angles you can set focus at infinity and never worry unless you want a close-up macro type shot. The lens will focus as close as 24cm (9.4"). The adapter may limit close focus... I've never tested for that.
The Sigma 8–16mm f/4.5–5.6 is AN ULTRA-WIDE BEAST. The 35mm equivalent range is 12.24 - 24.48mm. It is a true Rectilinear ultra-wide, preserving straight lines in the resulting images. The whole optical construction is well controlled in all aspects: rectilinear, low chromatic aberration, low coma, high light transmission, sharpness, and contrast. The lens includes FLD, SLD, and Aspherical elements for outstanding optical performance.
I primarily used the lens for astro and long exposure with occasional landscapes. This would make a great Architectural and Interior photography lens. It excels at ultra-wide views in tight spaces and expansive vistas in nature.
Lens Construction: 15 elements in 11 groups
Angle of View: 121.2 - 83.2°
Number of Diaphragm Blades: 7 Blades
Maximum Aperture: f/4.5-5.6
Minimum Aperture: f/22
Minimum Focusing Distance: 24cm/ 9.4in.
Maximum Magnification Ratio: 1:7.8
Weight: 555g/ 19.6oz.
If the pinch cap is removed, the adapter sleeve will mount 72mm filters. Vignetting will occur so plan on 8mm focal length if using a filter.
The LA-EA1 adapter has a removable "foot" that accepts the tripod mounting plate of your choice. This keeps the weight of the lens off your camera's mounting ring during tripod use. Remove the "foot" if it gets in your way when going hand-held.
